Notes and Tips

Gulf Coast Penstemon is reminiscent of Columbine but is much better suited for hot Houston summers. The basal rosettes of green leaves remain evergreen in winter. Gulf Coast Penstemon is one of the first wildflowers to bloom in the spring. It makes a great accent plant in the front of wildflower beds where its delicate blooms can be displayed to full advantage. It also performs well in the mulched beds of groves containing understory trees such as yaupon and hawthorn. Once the plants have finished blooming, don't cut the seed stalks. The seeds provide new plants as well as food for birds.
